It has been an ongoing battle for years that has pit doctors and hospitals against trial lawyers. It is legislation to create a Birth Injury Fund to compensate families and provide care for children who suffer permanent birth injuries. The goal here is to avoid lawsuits against hospitals which both doctors and trial lawyers say can take years to settle, leaving families stuck with legal and medical bills struggling to pay for care. Under the legislation, hospitals would pay for the fund. Supporters of the measure released a poll this week finding seven out of 10 Marylanders support the idea. READ MORE

A Washington-based hospital operator, BridgePoint has two long-term acute care hospitals on Capitol Hill and in Southwest Washington, according to the its website, providing 24-hour physician, nursing and respiratory care.
